Today in chemistry class, we Tried to make magic sand. which is waterproof sand. In order to make this, we coded each grain of sand with Scotchguard. Before we did this lab, we learned about covalent and ionic compounds. we learned that ionic compound exchanges electrons, Which means one element gives an electron and another takes. Ionic compounds are polar, which means there is a difference in charge. Covalent compounds share electrons, but they have a weaker bond.
The Scotch Guard is made of chemicals that do not react with water, Scotchgard is also non-polar, meaning it will not dissolve in water. but the sand does react with water. Which is why covering each grain of sand with scotch guard will make the sand water resistant. We coated the sand 6 times to ensure each grain of sand was coated dried it in the sun for a few minutes. The goal of this lab was to make magic sand |
