Looking Back:
This experiment went pretty well. The first thing I did was measure the amount of V8 juice and gelatin I needed. when the gelatin had absorbed all the juice, I put it on the stove until all the gelatin had melted in to a liquid. I then added some food coloring. Once they were all mixed in I slowly poured them into molds and placed them in the refrigerator.
Materials:
- Pot
- V8 Juice
- Unflavored Gelatin
- Molds
- Measuring spoons
Looking Beyond:
The science behind fruit snacks is the gelatin inside. Gelatin is a powdery substance that is found mostly in jello and gummy candy. Once it comes in contact with any liquid it turns in to jello and becomes one compound. That compound is called polymer.A polymer is a compound formed of many molecules strung into long chains. Each of the molecules are called Monomer (mono meaning one) When they string together into a chain they become a Polymer (poly meaning man). polymers take up different physical characteristics depending upon what molecules they are made of and how they link together. They can be gummy, stretchy, hard, clear, cloudy, etc.
Looking Inward:
I did really get the results I thought I as going to get. I was expecting them to turn out like the fruit snacks you get at the store. The problem I ran in to was that I added to much gelatin and it tasted more like jello than fruit snacks.
Looking Outward:
Darcy and I were interested in making fruit snacks. but, we had break in-between this section. We decided to do the experiment separately during break. I really enjoyed doing doing this experiment by myself, because I could pick what flavor I wanted to make them. but I really enjoy working with Darcy.
Looking Forward:
If I were to try this again I would definitely. add less gelatin and some sugar to get it more like gummy worms. I would like to work with Darcy if I did this again. We had the plan to but spring break got in the way of that.
Take Aways:
My take aways from this experiment was that I am going to stick to buying gummies instead of making them myself because they are time consuming and they don't taste as good
