About two weeks ago on Tuesday in chemistry class we did an experiment with hydrogen, magnesium, citric acid, and water. First we started with a boiling flask and we added a couple pieces o f magnesium in it and then we added a little bit of citric acid. We then poured water into the flask and put the balloon on right away. This made sure that the hydrogen, when it started to escape from the flask would go into the balloon. Right away the magnesium started to fizz. The flask then became really hot and started to smoke. The smoke, was hydrogen, the smoke went into the balloon and the balloon began to inflate.
After the balloon was filled up with the hydrogen, we took it off the flask and tied it. The balloon began to float because it was lighter than the air around it. After this we taped it to a yardstick and lit a candle then put the balloon near the fire and it exploded. This occurred because hydrogen is highly reactive meaning with just a little flame, it can explode.
I really enjoyed this lab because I thought it was a great way to learn about atoms and how the bond together. I collaborated okay with my peers I think the only thing that went really well was that we were successful with the experiment. I thought lighting the hydrogen filled balloon on fire was really fun. Looking back on this lab, I really enjoyed this lab I would want to do this again
